For the longest time, getting mugged was not something that I was scared of, at the time, I had the attitude that muggings happened to other people and not me. That changed for me in an instant, I was aimlessly walking around when out of nowhere some guy asked me what the time was and as I took out my phone to check the time, I was surprised by the sudden feel of a knife pressed against my ribcage.
To cut the story short, that little incident cost me my phone, my passport, and my wallet. It was a harsh wake-up call, to say the least. So, from someone who has had it happen to them here are five tips, to avoid getting mugged.
Always Trust Your Instincts
I once gave in to 'Dutch courage' after a few drinks and decided to walk from a bar in Malindi, Kenya, back to my hotel room at almost midnight. The walk involved following a short dark path that had palm trees on both sides. I noticed some movement in the palm trees which was a red flag, but decided to ignore it.
By the time I realized my mistake, two men had jumped from the palm trees and already had their hands in my pockets taking everything they could find inside. I should've listened to my gut in that moment instead of brushing off the feeling that something wasn't right.
Keep Valuables in Unexpected Places
My family makes fun of me for doing this but it works. When travelling I tend to keep my passport in my socks. Yes, you heard me right, I tuck my passport and my essential cards in my socks which greatly reduces my chances of losing them during a mugging.
If you are in a hotel or an Airbnb and notice dodgy or foul play you can hide your passport in the freezer or under the mattress.
Keep a Lookout for Safe Spaces
When in unfamiliar territory always be on the lookout for safe spaces that you can use. They include museums, malls, washrooms, and restaurants. These spaces will allow you to safely make phone calls and count your money without endangering yourself.
Be Vigilant of Your Surroundings
Always make a point of being aware of what is happening in your vicinity. The truth is in the world we are currently living in, you sometimes have to keep looking over your shoulder just to be safe. Make sure you are walking confidently with your eyes up and avoid looking at your phone. The element of surprise is very important to a mugger, if you suspect that you are being followed deter the criminal by crossing the street or entering a public business.
Ask For Help
If you think that you are in danger, it is smart to ask for help. Not everyone is out to hurt you, there are some genuinely good people out there who are willing to help. If you have the suspicion that you are being followed, make a point of pointing out the culprit to a security guard or policeman if possible. Also, it's usually safer to travel in groups so if you are in an area that doesn't feel safe consider walking home with a friend.
I have been mugged a few times and I've realized the incidents may have been able to be avoided if I had been just a little more vigilant. I would have saved myself the fear, detective investigations, and loads of time and paperwork to replace my items. It's better to be safe than sorry!
