City Girl Thoughts

A poem articulating how it feels to move to a big city, after knowing only a small town from birth.

Every second

That goes by in this city

Feels like a moment on the lips

Though I find myself longing for a kiss

And a lifetime on the thighs, chasing dreams but to no surprise

To no end, I should say instead

The tubes run every two minutes, and though I'm told they're classed as small trains and - not - big trains

I still find myself gawking at how quick the journey can really move

How fast paced every inch of life is and just how much it costs me to scream mentally

 - I'm a city girllll -

Though, my small town did me no favors

She left a sour taste in my mouth

and tainted my perception of what the good life is supposed to be

Take it slow, steady, easy

but don't bask in the moment too long

for you'll find yourself standing in front of that red dot

with people asking - what - you're doing

and suddenly feeling like you're - doing - wrong

Except, all I am - or - all I was doing

was living

Breathing fresh air and not feeling guilty in central because I've no change, I've already handed my last spare

So I guess - I ask myself

What am I doing, here?

What part of who I am led me, here?

Led me to believe that in a city like this, I could still wear my peace on my sleeve, because she's slipping away at moments

Every time I find myself smiling at strangers,

forgetting that we're not all such friendly faces

And so,

I'm grieving a slow life

While finding a way to quench the insatiable hunger

of my dreams.
