Runner's Prayer
Ongoing: repetitive, reviving, reliving the
Sunday half-morns of glittering pitch dew and
Scrunched grass crunched under hunched boots
No flicker of thought beyond memory spilling
Through pulsing veins like drips
Trickling, flicking out of a bust water bottle
Motion after motion my legs lunging forward
One-two
One-two
One breath too many as the
Bronchi twinges into knots too tight to take but
God, is it better off.
As autumn crumbles raw beneath April's gleam
Spring’s buzzing brilliance brings meaning as
Ice sizzles melting slick down an old tree spine
A smack of guddy soles singing to a bird ring
So only a soaring football is spiralling, so only
Wordly sun blazes set my temples glittering
Flying off my feet on frantic panting sets a heart
Pumping, thumping
In a course of becoming
And if a breathless chest contracts these days
Believe, it is self-induced.
