Note from the author: This poem is a small snippet of what my 1 AM looks like—filled with introspection, melancholy, and the raw honesty of confronting my deepest thoughts and emotions. What about yours? What are your 1 AM memories?
1 AM
1 AM is for those who
don't imagine ideal 8 AMs
It's for those of us who choose
to wear our hearts on our sleeves
because that was the only way
we figured out how to fit someone
into its cracks and call it love.
1 AM is for the kind of melancholy:
the all-engulfing type
that makes you feel like
desolation might be the
only way you may make it out alive.
1 AM is for the overthinkers
We don't do it because we like it,
we do it because it was the only
survival mechanism we grew up learning
It feels safe to be in danger,
it feels satisfying to watch our
hearts paint the darkest night
and accept our sorrows.
1 AMs aren't for happy endings
or for mixtapes of dreams coming true
1 AMs are for those of us
who stare deep into our voids,
trying to remember how someone
once held us together.
1 AMs are the brutally honest lyrics
of a long, long night.
We embrace them on loop,
hitting us where we are strong
because we've already put up
our weak parts for adoption.
