At traffic stops across Pakistan, it is common to see dozens of beggars waiting for a chance to approach the windows of the passing cars. These beggars include young children or women carrying toddlers. Begging is a global issue, but in countries like mine, some children are forced or instructed to beg, sometimes under distressing conditions.

Experiencing such a scene will warm even the coldest of hearts. However, every time a beggar approaches me, my internal moral compass goes haywire. A part of me thinks that giving some change will not drain my pockets, but it will give some relief to this impoverished person. Despite this beckoning, most times, I manage not to let my emotions sway me because giving money directly to beggars can sometimes unintentionally support exploitative systems.

In Pakistan, organized groups, sometimes referred to as "beggar mafias", exploit people's kindness, forcing or coercing vulnerable individuals, even very young children, to beg on their behalf. In some heartbreaking instances, children are even maimed to attract more sympathy and larger donations. Reports estimate that over 1.2 million children in Pakistan are entangled in street begging, many under the control of such groups.

Giving money under these circumstances risks fueling a cycle of exploitation. By giving money to beggars, we incentivize this behavior as mafias see that this approach clearly works, so they continue with these despicable acts. Therefore, despite my emotions screaming against it, I refrain from giving money to beggars. Mostly.

This is easier said than done, as my resolve has faltered on more than one occasion. Of course, upon seeing maimed children, who could refrain from helping them? But with time, I have realized that the real issue is not whether to help, but how to do so responsibly. I think buying them food, clothing, and other necessities they might be deprived of will help them without contributing to a larger system of abuse.

As an alternative, I encourage donating to reputable charities or rehabilitation facilities that provide essentials and education for children, or work opportunities for adults, rather than giving directly to those begging on the streets.

If you ever visit Pakistan, India, or any other country where such practices are rampant, resist the urge to hand over money at stoplights. Every part of your being might compel you to do so, but realize that this will only fuel the flames of exploitation. Instead, focus on bringing lasting impact by donating to charities and other facilities because real change comes from investing in solutions, not just responding to momentary emotions.
