Since I extensively got into travelling, it became impossible for me to have regular gym access. Therefore, I felt the need to find an alternate method that would help me work on my fitness while I kept getting stronger. It was very obvious that travelling was going to affect my workouts in many ways. But there are certain things I did that helped me stay on track towards my goals.
I started doing calisthenics, or bodyweight exercises. These exercises can be done anytime, anywhere, with minimal to no equipment at all. Since I already went to the gym regularly before I started travelling, I had a good base of strength to start with. One thing I noticed when I started doing calisthenics was that my priorities changed a lot. Earlier, I just wanted to have bigger muscles and just trained for maximal hypertrophy, but now I want to get the strongest I can relative to my body weight, along with learning new calisthenics skills such as a planche or handstand pushups.
While my training style changed completely, the basic principles that were used in the gym remained pretty much the same. For example, training a few times a week consistently while progressing in my exercises and training mindfully, controlling each repetition.
It was very difficult to manage my food habits while traveling. I was unable to get adequate protein to meet my requirements from food alone, so I carried a pack of whey protein with me wherever I went. This is a very underrated tip for those who work on their fitness while traveling. When you go to a new place, it's very likely that you will feel the urge to try their cuisine and taste their exquisite dishes. But it's important to control the portion of the servings you take. Thankfully, I don't have a sweet tooth, and I can usually control my cravings for the most part.
Sleep is one very big factor when it comes to fitness. The human body recovers during sleep. My sleep schedule gets completely messed up while I travel. I struggle with jetlag from time to time. But I follow the basic tips to improve my sleep, like avoiding using my phone just before sleep and avoiding caffeine in the evening.
There were times when I used to practice calisthenics in public places. Many people, especially the kids, were impressed by the skills I performed in my training. It feels so good when you inspire young children to train. It is not possible for me to describe that feeling. I still feel amazed when I watch recordings of myself performing bodyweight skills I could only once imagine in front of different beautiful monuments across the world.
To finish, I would like to say that it wasn't easy at all to manage my workouts, sleep, and diet while traveling. But by incorporating certain measures, following a clearly defined plan, and sticking to the basics, you can also achieve your fitness goals and continue to progress consistently.
