LGBTQ+ inclusive fiction allows the reader to feel safe within the pages of a book, recognised for their authentic self and truly comforted in knowing that they are not alone. My previous VoiceBox article discussed the importance of literature which acknowledges all sexual orientations and identities, and this blog is essentially a part-two of book suggestions. Of course there are many more novels with such representation (too many to fit here!) but these are simply a few well-enjoyed by me.
Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth
Despite her own personal struggles with her mother’s alcoholism and her academic life, Aideen volunteers to help overachiever Meabh escape her life of perfectionism through doing a rather questionable and violent ‘favour’ for her. Following this, Aideen begins to trade favors with others throughout a story of love, self-improvement and hilarious one-liners.
A highly realistic and enjoyable piece of Irish YA, Not My Problem’s multidimensional and engaging cast feel like actual teenagers (and that’s coming from one!). The novel handles tough topics such as addiction and the struggle of perfectionism so well, each line felt relatable and evidently, Smyth created these complex characters with such consideration and depth. Moreover, Not My Problem is an inclusive story involving a lesbian relationship which is written very well and will have you smiling for ages!
Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth
Sunburn explores the transition from friendship to strong infatuation in a 1990s Irish summer’s setting through the weight of religious guilt, immense desire and a beautifully poetic style.
A re-readable novel with such stunning control of language, Howarth explores the deepest and most devastating parts of the conflict between religious, traditional beliefs and sexuality. Howarth has undeniably invested her heart into Sunburn. Through the lesbian relationship between the protagonist, Lucy, and the highly intriguing Susannah, the author captures the experience of first love against the force of traditional societal expectations so perfectly.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
A heartwarming graphic novel series (and show!) following two teenagers, Nick and Charlie, through school, young love and coming-of-age. A fantastic cast of characters include transgender, bisexual and gay teenagers throughout the storyline of Nick and Charlie’s relationship.
Heartstopper left me smiling uncontrollably for days! The illustrations are gorgeous and every page keeps you engaged as you root for these two wonderful protagonists. Regardless of your age, you will feel all the butterflies and excitement of a first crush all over again through Nick and Charlie. Honestly, I read Volume One in one sitting and immediately wanted Volume Two. The LGBTQ+ representation and beauty of this story makes these novels such a safe space for so many teens. Oseman equally acknowledges the impact of homophobia, however, in a realistic way.
I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson
In this beautifully heartbreaking and engaging YA novel, we follow both the narratives of a bold Jude and her twin brother, the wry and artistic Noah.
No words could sufficiently summarise my love for this book, and anyone who has listened to my book recommendations certainly knows. The lyrical elements of the prose, the stunning metaphors and the perfect change from either twin’s perspective are only a few reasons to read I’ll Give You The Sun. Beyond that, the novel contains such complex and unforgettable characters and is utterly joyous, heartbreaking and everything in-between. LGBTQ+ representation through a gay protagonist, absorbing writing and so many moments which will leave you thinking for ages – why wouldn’t you read it?
While not all of these novels are romances, they are all inclusive and highly enjoyable reads to add to your reading pile. Remember, recommending and promoting LGBTQ+ fiction is highly important for creating a sense of belonging for all readers in the pages of a book. All forms of love deserve to be present in our favourite characters and stories. So, stick these awesome books on your TBR list!
