To give a brief introduction to me, I am a teenager who has been a skinny kid my whole life. Being called names was nothing new to me. I have been quite into sports since my childhood, though. I remember watching videos of all kinds of skills that amused me but I didn't really know what they were doing until I started digging into it further. That's when I discovered what calisthenics was. That's also when my love for this sport grew, and I figured out that this was what I wanted to do.
Calisthenics is the art of mastering your own body weight by performing various skills that require strength, agility, balance, coordination, and much more. The biggest pros of callisthenics are that it can be performed almost anywhere you can find some empty space, and whether you're a beginner or advanced, its difficulty can be modified depending on your level. Not only that, the skills look quite impressive and will benefit you in other facets of life as well. Calisthenics is much easier on your joints, and it's a great way to add lean muscle mass to your frame, making you look muscular.
You don't need a gym membership to start your journey. In the beginning, I started doing pushups in the comfort of my home. Although not in proper form, that laid the foundation of my calisthenics journey. Soon after, I started achieving more skills as I grew stronger with time. I started noticing visible changes in my body, and I felt more confident and energetic than before. Calisthenics also had a positive impact on my mental health. It's amazing how joyful you feel when you master a skill for the first time. This is what makes bodyweight training so impressive.
If you want to begin your own calisthenics journey, I would advise you to stick to the basics, i.e., workout a few times a week with progressive overload, have a well-balanced diet with adequate protein intake, and just be consistent. I find that watching videos online that guide you through the steps is really helpful, especially when you are first starting out. Start by incorporating various push and pull movements combined with leg training into your schedule. As you continue to get stronger, try doing your own research and deciding what you want to accomplish. Whether you want to learn weighted calisthenics or acquire advanced skills, you can choose your own path.
The most fascinating aspect of this journey is how well calisthenics integrates into your regular life. Since starting, I have felt more confident, active, healthier, and more productive. Calisthenics is not a short pathway but rather a way of life where you can simply keep getting better and learning new things. It requires patience and a lot of determination, which makes it even more challenging, thus making you stronger not only physically but also mentally. If there's one piece of advice I could give to people just starting out with calisthenics, it's to enjoy their journey as much as possible and just trust the process.
