Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, usually starting and ending at the same period of time every year. Most people suffering from SAD experience symptoms during the cold months of the year. However, one form of this condition is summertime seasonal affective disorder, a less common variation of the disorder that affects about 10% of those with SAD, where the onset of the summer heat triggers depression instead. Common symptoms include decreased appetite, insomnia, weight loss, and increased anxiety and agitation.
What Triggers My Summertime SADness
Clear blue skies, lack of school, music festivals, and tan lines are some of the countless things people love about summer. They have places to go, plans to make, people to see. But for me, summer makes my Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) go haywire. If I don't constantly have fun and enjoy my vacation to the fullest every single day, I start feeling guilty for wasting the free time I've been eagerly anticipating all year.
But I can't quite fully have fun. Why?
Because when the heat ramps up, so does the need to wear lighter, more revealing clothing. Unfortunately, I am in the 10-30% of men who are dissatisfied with their appearance and I shy away from activities where my body will be exposed, such as beach outings or pool parties.
But since these types of activities are the bread and butter of summertime, skipping them means that I end up all by myself.
At first glance, this probably doesn't sound too bad. But experts emphasize that isolation not only heightens the risk of heat-related issues but that heat can also exacerbate isolation. High temperatures deplete the body's energy reserves and impair cognitive abilities, leading to symptoms such as confusion. Socializing is already an uphill battle for me, and the heat wave further hinders my ability to connect with others.
My summertime struggles don't end here.
Financial concerns add another stressor during the hot months of the year. First of all, ice cream prices are outrageous. Electricity bills still haven't recovered from the 2022 energy crisis, and the overall increase in the cost of living is enough to put a serious dent in anyone's budget.
All these changes throw a monkey wrench into the carefully crafted financial schedule I've meticulously crafted and maintained throughout the year.
Dealing with SAD
Living with Summertime Seasonal Affective Disorder is a challenge, but it's crucial to remember that you are not alone.
Staying hydrated, having a balanced routine and staying in touch with supportive friends or family members, can lessen the blow of Summertime SAD. But if that's not enough, seeking professional help can provide the necessary guidance and tools to manage the condition effectively.
Acknowledging and addressing our struggles with Summertime SAD is the first step toward finding some peace of mind during the heatwave. By sharing our experiences and raising awareness of this lesser-known side of seasonal affective disorder, we can build a stronger support network and create a more inclusive, understanding environment for all.
